More poetry of 2026

8 August 2026

As already mentioned in my previous poetry posts, after many many years, I've once again turned my hand to trying to craft poetry. This in a large part has been motivated by the various themes on BlueSky that mix poetry with photography. For example, #ImageAndVerse or #PaintByWords. Both encourage you to write your own poems matched with one of your own images. With that in mind here is are even more of my most recent attempts.

Dark Waters

Dark waters gently rippled
But these don't run deep
Thick branches fallen
Dead trees standing
Frogs sing
Cockatoos screech
And gulls...
Gulls sleep.

Scenes from a Birdbath #1

Scenes from a Birdbath #1
Stopping on their migration
Townsend Warblers had a spa break.
Demure Victorian-age bathers
Smiling into the camera
In a vintage photograph.
Or maybe they were Sumo
Soaking in their post-bout onsen.
They were charming guests
Despite their later frolicking.

Scenes from a Birdbath #2

Scenes from a Birdbath #2
They came to bathe
On a hot day
The cooling waters eased
The stresses from
The long flight behind
With a long flight ahead
For a moment
Just a moment
The splashed and played

Scenes from a Birdbath #3

Scenese from a Birdbath #3
Never have I seen
A bird so enjoy
Every cooling moment
Every refreshing second
It played
It sprayed
It frolicked
It stayed
Until it was satisfied
It was clean and cool.

Python Cockatoo

Python Cockatoo
You are who exactly?
And why are you
Disturbing my peace?
I know you not.
Now go away
Or I shall screech
A second time.
